The Slaney started well with some fine fresh salmon caught & released. Most fish being caught in the beats below Clohamon. Some anglers have had quite exceptional spring fishing with up to 10 fish to their own rod up to 17lbs. I’ll post a few pictures later
June 30th -July 5th
Another memorable week on that lovely spate river in west Mayo with Chris, Simon, Archie & Gerald. Jim joined us for dinner on Monday evening. We were blessed with three good floods during the week . We all fished hard & covered a huge amount of water. Reward always comes to those who persevere & we were all well rewarded. All sea trout, bar one, safely returned to the water. All salmon, except one each, returned. Gerald ,top rod.
Merlin, grouse, sand martin, skylarks, foxes & rabbits & numerous other wildlife, we enjoyed. Also thanks to John Noel, Tom & his lovely niece, Gerry, Tommy & Peter for their visits. Always good to catch up with local news.
July 10 / 17th
The water is getting warmer & the bass are starting to come in. I’ve had some amazing fishing, mostly in the evenings when the sun goes down. I’m off tomorrow morning early before the heat starts again! Mark & I have enjoyed a few trips this week. All the fish were safely returned bar one which Pauric & Madeline had for dinner!
July 18th & 19th.
4am start both days & on the fishing grounds by 4.30!. A real treat to see the sun rise & with this fine weather at present, the joy of being able to fish in a tea shirt at that hour is brilliant! It doesn’t happen often but on both these mornings the bass were feeding hard & on the surface. A sight that really gets the adrenalin going. Surface lures produce a reaction & take every cast. I’ll not mention numbers caught but just to say my two companions, Mark & Mick will not forget both these mornings! Spectacular.
August 1st to 5th.
Ballina at its finest. Our first day there saw low water conditions & the Ridge & Cathedral beats full of fish! Three rods on the Cathedral & one on the Ridge. We all had fish before breakfast except John. After breakfast, the water started to rise after a fierce nights rain up country. John landed his first fish on a double handed rod. A fine fish of 6.5lbs. We all struggled from then on as the water levels rose. We managed a few fish each day but the best of it had gone & there was no sign of any fresh fish entering the system. Kevin very kindly introduced me to East Mayo where I caught a small fish. Water a bit strong & coloured up there as well.
Breda & Davy as usual are just wonderful. Thanks to them. Also thanks to Stuart & Jim at Mount Falcon.
Beleek Castle well worth a visit if in the area.

Declan rang me to see if I wanted to join him for a day on the Blackwater. Water levels looked good so after an early start I met him in Mallow & in no time we were fishing. Lovely bit of fly water. Declan was quick off the mark with a fine fish in the 8lb category! Several fish showing but hard to catch. The blazing sun didn’t help. I managed a good autumn fish of about 10lbs & soon after had another two good pulls. We fished on until dark without another touch. A lovely day & thanks Declan. We’ll be back.
